Tile Expansion Joints

PRO-join is our solution for large tiled floors, used mainly to eliminate the gaps between the ceramic tiled blocks in large open areas, such as airports, hotels, shopping malls and hospitals.

PRO-join prevents the risk of damage which can be caused by expansion and contraction due to temperature changes. The design also prevents damage caused by pedestrian and light vehicle traffic.

Fluctuation in Temperature

Temperature plays a huge role in the built environment. There is less need to factor in measures that allow for size fluctuations on the installation on a small scale. However, with large tile installations, each tile's minimal growth or shrinkage is multiplied by the number of tiles in the area. Expansion trims for tile to tile, build in a mechanism to deal with this growth or shrinkage. A flexible joint is installed as breaks, keeping each block in a more manageable size, ensuring each expansion joint does not need to be very large.

Failure to install such a system will generally result in the tiles lifting from the floor due to the pressures they exert on each other, as they will expand when the temperature increases. Installing floor tiles during warmer periods does not remove this requirement either, as the tiles will retract as they cool, during the winter. The result is often loose tiles and cracked grout lines.
